Managing Change Successfully

This is an area that has been researched carefully over many years by leading thought leaders e.g. Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Tom Peters and many others.

PLGA have experienced Change Leaders, Consultants and Change Champions who have implemented change large and small. Programmes of Change include Whole of Business Unit restructuring, design of teams and behaviours, improving productivity and performance through group dynamics, culture change, as well as the design and delivery of IT and Marketing systems.

Change is happening to many organisations due to external factors and when change combines to hit from many fronts simultaneously, it can easily lead to decision makers feeling things are out of control.

We follow the Scientific Problem Solving Procedure and use appropriate processes and techniques in understanding the current situation, obtaining stakeholder engagement, winning hearts and minds, structuring realistic and relevant solutions and working in partnership to deliver and embed the desired solution.

 

Types of Change Programme

There are many types of change and your requirements will be carefully captured, recorded and encapsulated in a proposal to you, the Customer.

Care is taken and attention is paid to understanding the stage of change which the Customer and his/her business is going through. This will directly inform the solution to be designed and proposed.

 

Strategic Change Development

There are four main phases that we go through in designing and initiating the Change Programme.

1. Strategic Analysis.

We work with the key stakeholders to analyse how effectively and efficiently the Directors, Top Team, SMT, the organisation is meeting its Business Objectives and thereby, delivering against its Mission.

We involve the stakeholders in understanding where the organisation is now, what has changed since the original objectives were arrived at, whether they need to change and if so, to what.

2. The Way Forward.

We now take the next step of either verifying the veracity and integrity of the currect objectives, or facilitating the move to changing the strategic direction of the business and its objectives.

This is done by revisiting, in some cases creating, the Vision and how it is being or has been communicated. There may need to be a modification process to align the Values with a changed Vision. The Way Forward will need to take account of the marketplace the Business is in, the political, environmental, social and technological factors which form the business context and how they impact on the Business.

3. Strategic Design.

We help the stakeholders to go through this process in a controlled way, balancing creativity with reality, even though some may have blue sky epiphany moments on this journey. In step 2 we arrived at a consensus on what needs to be done and in this step, we look at how the business will deliver it – we design the Strategic Plan.

4. Implementation.

This can sometimes be the most difficult stage of all, when the change has to be implemented. Some consultancies only provide the advice and others focus on implementation. PLGA are able to offer both. We call on the deep experience and expertise of our Change Consultants and their understanding of personal, team and group dynamics, motivation, interactions, power, networks and comfort zones.

During this step which has an implicit focus on organisation design and development, we ensure the change is continually aligned to the Business Strategic Aims and Objective, is flexible and adaptable to external and internal pressures, is inclusive by involving as many as is practical and whilst having a focus on achieving progress, is still fun to work within. Full account is taken of risks and mitigation strategies, ongoing change and its implications, review points and milestones achievements.
